Udstillingen i Hjemsted oldtidspark
Hjemsted Odtidspark is an experience centre comprised of an adventure and activity park, as well as a large underground museum.
The idea for the park arose, when a series of sensational Iron Age discoveries were unearthed during excavations in the late 1970s. A series of settlements could be traced from about the time of the birth of Christ until about 600 A.D. on the edge of the marsh at Hjemsted Banke.
Both houses and graves have been excavated.
In the museum, which has been arranged to replicate a mine with rooms and passageways, the visitor is led through 1,000 years of Iron Age history. Coffins and burial urns are displayed in the floor. Along the walls, display cases exhibit the original finds and tell their stories.
The principle idea of the museum is that the excavated artefacts have been returned to the positions where they were discovered.
A glance outward into the rest of Europe contemporizes how life was unfolding for the Iron Age peasant in the fields around Hjemsted and with the lives lived in for instance the Roman Empire.
